As part of the special anniversary events, The Fabric Garden from Madison, Maine, donated 25 fabric kits containing 1/2 yd of a focus fabric and 1/4 yd each of 4 coordinating fabrics. The basic rules were that a recognizable amount of the "Kala’s Challenge Fabrics" had to be used as an integral part of the entry, and must appear in the body of the quilt, not just the border. Each participant was allowed to add up to 3 more fabrics to the group challenge fabrics and could delete one fabric from Kala’s challenge except the focus fabric. The quilt could be of any shape, but the combined total of all sides of the quilt could not be less than 72 inches nor more than 160 inches. Scalloped edges and non-traditional designs were allowed, but they had to hang well from a sleeve with no other support or pins.Quilts entries could be made with appliqué, pieced, mixed technique and/or embellishments. Creativity was the key.
The results were astounding and unique. The first three photos are of the winning entries and then others are shown in the order of the numbers as they were hung at the show. Jennifer Metzger co-ordinated the challenge and took the studio photos. Other photos were taken at the show.
All of the challenge creations are now hanging at the Fabric Garden in Madison, and on their website they have issued an invite for all to come to see them.
Ellen Nadeau submitted a photo of her entry to Jan Krentz, Quilt Teacher, Author, and Designer. The Fabric Garden website also mentions this and gives this link to that site: http://www.jankrentz.com/weblog/?p=1041
